Make & Model – Each platform has different advantages, costs, and service networks
Wheelbase – Longer wheelbases offer more living space, while shorter ones are easier to drive and park
Roof Height – High roofs allow most people to stand upright inside and provides more vertical storage space
Drivetrain (FWD / RWD / AWD) – This affects traction, maintenance, and how the van performs in different environments
Color – Darker vans absorb more heat, which can make the interior warmer in hot climates, but they are more stealthy at night, while lighter colors like white stay cooler but are more visible

The most common vans used for camper van conversions are:
Mercedes Sprinter ($$$)
Ford Transit ($$)
Ram ProMaster ($)
Each platform has its own advantages depending on your build goals, budget, and driving preferences. I highly recommend test driving all three platforms before making a decision.
-
Compared to the Mercedes Sprinter and Ford Transit, Ram ProMasters offer:
Wider interior width - Allowing more aisle space while maintaining storage and a wall-to-wall bed
More squared walls - Making the interior easier to build out
Lower upfront cost
Widely serviceable by most mechanics
Generally cheaper and quicker to repair
-
Lower ground clearance than a Sprinter, but higher than a Transit
Front-wheel drive only
Every van platform has trade-offs, so choosing the right one comes down to your wants, needs, and lifestyle.
-
The Ram ProMaster is available in 136", 159", and 159" Extended wheelbases. The 159" offers the balance of interior space and drivability.
Enough interior length to create distinct living areas (bed, kitchen, seating etc.)
More storage space than shorter wheelbases
Still manageable to drive and park in urban areas
However, this decision is highly dependent on your lifestyle and how you plan to use the van.

Factory options to consider when ordering a new van from the dealership:
Wide side mirrors with blind-spot detection
Factory-installed windows on the rear doors and sliding door
120V outlet in the cab

Yes — I’d buy a ProMaster again in a heartbeat, and I’d choose the same 159" wheelbase.
However, if ordering the van again, there are a few factory options I’d add:
Factory-installed swivel seats instead of installing aftermarket ones
Rearview mirror camera for better visibility while driving, especially if you don’t have rear door windows or your build blocks your view
A 3500 model for ~400 lbs of additional payload capacity, depending on your build and lifestyle needs
Overall, the ProMaster has been an excellent platform for my build and lifestyle - I love it!
