Countertops & Tables

Countertops

    • 1.5” thick Hevea Butcher Block

    • Waco Wipe-On Butcher Block Oil & Finish

    • The aesthetic I was going for with pretty grains and wood finish

    • Butcher Block is HEAVY!

      • A lot of added weight

    • Future maintenance

      • To keep them looking good, ideally sand and finish them once a year.

    • Install a lip over the unit sides for a house like finish and so spills don’t go down your cabinets

      • I did a 1/4” over hand past the sides

        • Take into account the drawer face thickness and handles too

    • Screw up from the bottom to hold in place

      • Predrill holes

      • Could use clips that allows the grains to expand and contract easier in changing climates to avoid cracking or warping

    • Round the top edge and corners for a softer finish

      • not the edge against other cabinetry or walls - you want a flush install there

    • Countertop space is HUGE in a van, make sure you prioritize it

      • Add extra countertop space with a fold up countertop extension, like the one to the left of my sink

      • Undermount the sink so you can cover it with a board for more useable countertop space

        • Also hides dirty dishes and keeps odors in the sink

    • Plywood

    • Thinscape from WilsonArt

      • Thin

      • Durable

      • Leightweight

      • BEAUTIFUL finish

  • Although very heavy, I love my butcher block countertops.

Tables

    • I have 6 tables in the van, all made from 1/2” baltic birch plywood with a fun design I painted

      • 1 main table on a Lagun mount in the back for my u-shaped couch space

        • Fills in the center space for my bed

      • 1 on a lagun mount in my sliding door entrance for a standing desk or to use when sitting in my passenger seat when turned around

        • I found a mounting bracket that attaches directly to the passenger chair base for the Lagun mount to attach

      • 1 out the rear doors

      • 2 out the sliding door off the back of my kitchen unit

        • One for standing, one for sitting

      • 1 portable table stored on top of the drawer under my fridge

        • Extra countertop space when cooking or loading and unloading the groceries

        • It is also removable so I can use it on my lap when chilling in bed or outside in a chair

    • Places to eat, work, play games & host.

    • I like having multiple tables so I can change up my routine and sit in different areas of the van

    • Hardware

      • Lagun Table Mount

        • Allows for the tables to be versatile in height and moving into multiple different positions

        • Buy directly from LagunUSA.com, not Amazon, those are knock offs

      • Piano Hinge

      • Table support string or wire to hold the table open

    • Add edge banding on the side to cover the plywood ends if you are staining them instead of painting

  • I love having several tables throughout the van to eat, work and relax. It’s good to have a change of scenery when you live in a small space.
